Shades of Red and Pink

I am already sick of love,
My very gentle Valentine,
Since for me you were born too soon,
And I for you was born too late.
God forgives he who has estranged
Me from you for the whole year.
I am already etc.
My very gentle, etc.
Well might I have suspected,
Having such a destiny, cousin
Thus would have happened this day,
How much that Love would have commanded.
I am already, etc.

(Charles d'Orleans--said to be the first Valentine written in any language--language modernized).

Valentines Day--a day when people all around the world celebrate with their loved ones by purchasing flowers, chocolate, stuffed animals, and small gifts for each other. It is a day filled with colors of all shades of red and pink. But why do we celebrate Valentines Day? What does it have to do with romance?

Throughout history, in the different ages, the month of February as been recognized as the month of fertility. Starting with ancient times, there were pagan festivals celebrating the gods of fertility and love. In the middle ages, it became associated with romantic love. Traditionally, hand-written letters were exchanged professing your emotions of admiration of your love. Today, we purchase commercial cards and other gifts to show this. Did you know that approximately 1 billion Valentine cards are sent each year? This is the second largest holiday were cards are sold in such vast quantities.
